Word of the Year

The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.—Revelations 12:6

Do you use a word or phrase of the year to focus on? Or one God has given you in some manner?

I’ve chosen words, or words have chosen me, since before choosing a “word of the year” became popular. Not every year, but early in my faith walk, I picked one word to focus on. Usually it was an attribute I wanted to cultivate or overcome, like humility or pride. I was a wee saint in the world, toddling into the enormous God story. The doctrines of the faith seemed overwhelming and elusive. But a word at a time—an ancient practice—whittled things down to manageable bites.

Lately word of the year has become more regular as a practice, perhaps because of the world’s increasing chaos. Again I’m reduced to needing simplicity—one focal point.

Last year my word was longings. In retrospect, I’m astonished to see how deeply God led me into that word over the year. Some longings were fulfilled in amazing ways. Others await their fulfillment.

In the Wilderness

This year my word is a phrase — “In the wilderness.” Not an indicator of my mood or spiritual season, as far as I’m aware, but a paradigm shift I experienced while studying Revelation 12. The phrase appears twice, in verses 6 and 14. What is this place? I wondered, and have been wondering ever since.

Then I discovered the Redemption Press folks were hosting a free workshop on word of the year, so I registered. After listening to their tips and tricks, I left with a pile of reflection questions, homework, and organizational tools to last me the year. I downloaded the free eBook and bought a shiny new notebook at the Dollar Store. Stay tuned as I journal the process and glean the treasures! I hope my practice will spark your interest and expand your vision of God who is the Word made flesh.

Or maybe you’re an old pro and have tips and tricks to share. Have you practiced this exercise before? Do you have a word or a story you’re focusing on this year?
